The
Relationship-with-Self Spiritual Encyclopedia: An
Encylopedia Full of People Who are Not Afraid of Being Themselves!
In this version of
a spiritual encyclopedia, you'll find something a little different.
What you will find is a collection of unique, inspiring individuals,
groups, families, and couples who have learned the importance of
accepting themselves for who they are and making the best of their life!
These individuals,
families, and couples have gone through many setbacks, rejection, and
feelings of being different in our society, which has enabled them to
learn what loving oneself is all about.
And since
spirituality is all about accepting "what is" and putting your faith
into a "higher power of some sort," I figured why not create an
encyclopedia of people who are actual everyday role models of
spirituality.
My hope is that
these people will inspire you to learn how to love yourself
for who you are as well.
Matt
Roloff
The first person
who I have added to the spiritual encyclopedia is Matt Roloff from "Little
People, Big World!".
Matt was born with
diastrophic dysplasia, a form of dwarfism. However, he has not let his
dwarfism hold him back from accomplishing his dreams. In fact, he
enjoys educating others about this condition. In addition, he runs his
own business; he has built a huge farm in Oregon for him, his family,
and
the public; he is constantly starting challenging projects; and he is
always embracing life to the fullest.
Matt and his wife,
Amy, are parents of 4 children; three average size and one who is a
dwarf. Matt's quote for life is...
"Anything
is possible!"
The reason I have
chosen Matt as the first person in the spiritual encyclopedia is
because he has remained true to his dreams. He has also remained true
to who he is, regardless of his physical disabilities.
The group of people
who I feel belong in the spiritual encyclopedia are those who have down
syndrome. There is something very special about down syndrome and I
believe it's because those with down syndrome are genuine. Regardless
of their disability, those with down syndrome are true to themselves,
are often assertive with their needs, and are just fun to be around.
I am often very
inspired when I am in the presence of these special folks. They inspire
me to let go of expectations, enjoy life for what it is, and accept my
imperfections for what they are.
I love this down
syndrome creed poem...
The Down Syndrome Creed
My face may be
different, but my feelings the same.
I laugh, I cry, I take pride in my gains.
I was sent here among you to teach you to love.
As God in the heavens looks down from above.
To Him I'm no different, his love knows no bounds.
It's those here among you, in cities in towns,
that judge me by standards that man has imparted.
But the family He's chosen will help me get started.
For I'm one of His children, so special and few,
that came here to learn the same lessons as you.
That love is acceptance, it must come from the heart.
We all have the same purpose, though not from the start.
The Lord gave my life to live and embrace.
And I'll do it as you do, just at my own pace.

Patrick
Henry Hughes and His Father
This father and son
relationship is amazing. I came across this pair one day while watching
Oprah. The topic for that day was..Father Inspiration.
Patrick was born
without eyes and was born with a birth defect that wouldn't allow him
to straighten his arms or legs, which confined him to a wheelchair.
Because of the
enormous amount of obstacles that Patrick has overcome, with the help
of his father, I believe that this father son pair deserve a lot of
recognition and a spot in the spiritual encyclopedia. However, I
believe that Patrick says it best...
"I
am not someone with disabilities, but someone with a lot of abilities."
Patrick started
playing the piano at 9 months old; he joined the marching band with the
help of his amazing father; he is an outstanding piano and trumpet
player; he can sing; he has made his own music; and he has an inspiring
personality.
I highly recommend
that you check out his website
and some clips on youtube. Here is my favorite piece from youtube..
Overall, Patrick is
an outstanding role model, regardless of the "limitations" he may have.
I
will add more inspiring people shortly, so stay tuned for an updated
list... Thanks for your patience.
