I have been living with my boyfriend for 2 1/2 years. I think we have a pretty good relationship. He wants to get married and I think I do but there's one little problem.

I believe that he needs to ask my dad for his blessing first before I would propose to me. He is a little scared to ask and says that he won't. He believes that he shouldn't have to ask him.

What should I do? Am I over reacting to not accept a proposal (even though I want to) because he won't ask or didn't ask or should I just say yes anyways despite how me and my entire family feels? Please help me with this.

Roda,

It sounds like this is a very important issue for you and your family, so although your boyfriend is hesitant about asking your father's blessing, it's important to you that he respect your beliefs.

Even though your boyfriend doesn't believe in asking for your father's permission, this may be the nerves talking more than anything else. Let your boyfriend know how important this is to you, and having him ask for your father's blessing would be a great start to your engagement.

I am not in the place to say whether or not you're overreacting, but I can say that you are the one who will be his wife, not your family. If you and your boyfriend sit down and discuss how he can approach your family, he may feel more at ease and be more willing to ask.

However, I wouldn't hold this against him if he cannot do it. Just make sure you let him know how important this is to you. If he cannot honor your requests make sure you find some peace with yourself first before going forward with the engagement. If you move forward feeling uneasy and resentful about your boyfriend's decision not to ask, you'll have unnecessary problems down the road. Take some time to think about it.

With Love,

Brandy Shirley
