I want deep meaningful conversations and he doesn't provide that.

I am currently in a long distant relationship with my boyfriend of 2 years, we have been together almost every day and now he has joined the air force and he is 5 hours away from me in tech school .. We can text , video chat , phone call .... However when we do any of that stuff it's silence... Quiet no one is talking , we do the I love you , I miss you obvious stuff but I want deep meaningful conversations .... so my question is .. How do I fix our communication he says he's willing to work at it but never knows what to say ... I want to fix this before he goes off to japan in three months.
