handling and understanding when it ends

I'm a 50 yr old male. Recently, a 25 male and I became friends at work about 10 months ago. The friendship was based on are similar jobs and belonging to the same gym-fitness center.
Both of us are pretty heavy. We also--used to--go out for pizza or the sports bar in town. We eat lunch together 4 or 5 times a week. Inexplicably this has all ended by a gradual slowdown of him. "I'm busy" or he doesn't show up or he'll show up late. He's never available to go gym--he'll say "I like to go in the morning now "etc etc. This is all with no fight or disagreement on either side.
I suspect 2 situation of why it ended. So I am curious, do I confront him--in a nice way, I'm not looking for a fight. Or just let it go totally--which I have, I no longer call about work lunch or going out---it was a short friendship and has been a slowdown for 3 months.
My guess, if I ask him why, I won't get a straight answer, but I feel very sad and unresolved about it. thanks for your help , Jack
